Sun Shines on Headway Essex Classic Vehicle Show

Despite amber weather warnings for rain and storms on Sunday the sun shone for the Essex Classic Vehicle Show. The event returned to Colchester Lower Castle Park for its ninth year, transporting visitors back in time with a showcase of classic vehicles, music and dancing spanning the decades, and acrobatic performances by Team Kinetix.

This nostalgic event organised by local brain injury charity Headway Essex, raised nearly £12,000 for vital services supporting those in our community living with an acquired brain injury.

The 2024 show featured over 200 classic vehicles, collectively representing ten decades of motoring history. Trophies were awarded in various categories including best pre-war car and best vehicle of the show.

  • Best Pre-War awarded to Mike Frost with his 1929 Austin Burnham Saloon
  • Best Dressed Driver awarded to Stephanie Mason with her 1973 Reliant Bond Bug
  • Best American awarded to Ian Hobson with his 1965 Ford Mustang
  • Best of British awarded to Nigel Boyd with his 1966 Jaguar E-Type Challenger
  • Best Modern Classic awarded to Malcolm Wreford with his 1978 Bedford Army Truck
  • Best in Show awarded to John Goodwin with his 1965 Mk1 Ford Cortina

Dancers from LJ’s Jive school jived and strolled to music performed by rock n roll duo Double Trouble. There was plenty of other entertainment during the day with a selection of stalls including those selling motoring memorabilia, retro clothes and festival food. Families and spectators were gripped by two amazing shows by Team Kinetix who perform parkour, free-running and acrobatics including the performers jumping over a vehicle.

Sarah Wilson Headway Essex Fundraising Manager, said “It was wonderful to see so many people having a good time and raising such an amazing amount of money. We are incredibly grateful to all the classic vehicle owners for their support in making this such a wonderful event.
We are also very thankful for the tireless work of the many volunteers including local Police Cadets, Colchester Rotarians and Headway volunteers, and to this year’s sponsor, Blackwater Law. None of this would be possible without their help.

The proceeds raised will go to ensure that Headway Essex can continue to provide rehabilitation and support for brain injury survivors and their families and carers in Essex. Local support for the charity is critical as we rely on fundraising to provide our services that help nearly 600 people a year in Essex, with over 150 of these living in North East Essex.”
